Nandyala Editor

Impact

Nandyala Livros is a black bookstore-publisher highly specialized in Africanities, ethnic-racial and gender relations and sustainability, proposing a new publishing concept in the universe of the Portuguese language.

From Nyaneka-Nkumbi, a large ethnolinguistic group located in the southeastern plateau of Angola, “nandyala” means “born in a time of famine”. In traditional African fashion, the term names this black Editorial Organization, as it reveals its real conditions of birth, as well as its intense political-ideological project of fighting racism and sexism through reading, in favor of respect for diversity and differences.

Anti-racist, feminist, disruptive and innovative, Nandyala Livraria & Editora was designed by black women to publish and publish works committed to building a future with respect, ethnic-racial equity and affection. Through readings in diversity, we generate good living with equity!

History

Nandyala emerged in Belo Horizonte (MG) in 2006, in the context of Afro-pedagogical teacher training activities developed by teachers Iris Amâncio and Rosa Margarida Carvalho. Since the 1990s, both have taught courses, lectures and workshops focused on the pedagogical approach, in Basic Education, of content about Africa, focusing on the histories, cultures and literatures of African and Afro-diasporic peoples, as well as their repeated forms of resistance, struggle and liberation from the European colonial yoke. Hence, the two professors and researchers began to undertake an exquisite curation, which would later be consolidated into a space that brought together a highly qualified bibliography in terms of Africanities and ethnic-racial relations.
Early on, the bookselling space took on the publishing of works by black authors as an anti-racist tool that could impact the country's publishing market. Done! Thus, Nandyala Livraria-Editora was born in the capital of Minas Gerais, right in the heart of Savassi... Anti-racist, Africanist and inclusive, this black women's enterprise emerges as the first black Brazilian bookstore-publisher of the 21st century. In recent years, Iris Amâncio and Alice Amâncio (mother and daughter) have enhanced Nandyala's initial principles and purposes in a new headquarters in Praça Sete, in the heart of BH. Resilient, entrepreneurs transform the cruelty of racism into a driving force for promoting ethnic-racial equity through books and reading. Yes, anti-racist reading decolonizes minds and Afro-centered books fuel good living.

Book and editorial curation is the result of highly specialized, dreamy and critical perspectives, aimed at significant advances against racism in the present with a view to a future without racism.
