Origins and History

Archaeological research has discovered pieces made of hemp dating back to 12,000 BP (before present) in regions where China and Taiwan are today, leading many scientists to conclude that this may have been the first cultivated plant. in the history of humanity , thanks to its versatility: our ancestors and the generations that followed were always able to use it as a raw material to produce food, medicine, fabrics, ropes, paper and structures suitable for construction.


In the 1930s, political and economic interests led the United States to ban the cultivation of the entire Cannabis family without distinction -- which ended up eliminating the planting of hemp not only in the country, but throughout the world, for decades on end.

From the Cannabaceae family, the plant's scientific name is Cannabis, although it has different variants (wild or cultivated) and is generically called hemp or hemp.

  • The terms marijuana or marijuana are directly associated with variations that have a concentration of more than 30% THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychotropic active ingredient found in these Cannabis.

  • Hemp or hemp are the generic nomenclatures (recognized by the 2018 North American legislation) that classify another variant, with less than 0.3% THC in its composition.

Carbon molecules found in hemp stems prove its powerful ability to absorb CO2 : each hectare of area covered by the plant is capable of eliminating 22 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually.


As it is possible to have at least two harvests of the plant per year, this bill can double. Fast-growing, hemp reaches four meters within 100 days of planting, making it one of the most efficient alternatives for converting CO2 into biomass .

Although its characteristics are typical of annual cultivation, it also works as a perennial crop, with deep roots that prevent erosion. Hemp adapts to a multitude of soil types and climatic conditions, in addition to requiring very little care and consuming little water.

It is used to cover and recover soils depleted by monoculture or degraded by chemical products, preparing the land for planting other crops and eliminating the need for the use of artificial fertilizers.


Its filtering capacity is so great that it was used to eliminate radiation hotspots in Ukraine caused by the Chernobyl disaster. This process of eliminating toxins from the land and recovering it from pests and other evils is called phytoremediation .

Hemp sprouts are rich in canflavin A and canflavin B, natural anti-inflammatories 30 times more powerful than aspirin , which makes hemp an ally in the treatment of chronic pain and muscle regeneration.


CBD-based oils and medicinal products have been widely used to treat the effects of severe pathologies, such as epilepsy and cancer, to mental health problems such as insomnia, anxiety and depression .

Also considered a superfood, it is a source of protein for both humans and animals. The amino acids contained in its seeds are comparable to those present in beef or lamb: 30 grams of hemp seeds provide 11 grams of protein.


With a flavor similar to chestnuts and almonds, its sprouts are rich in good fats, such as omega 3 and omega 6 , and can be consumed in salads, pizzas and smoothies, and can be sprouted at home.
